Daughter of a german diplomat, Nika Standen Hazelton spent much of her childhood in European capitals, with her home base remaining in Germany. She wrote for the new statesman in London before moving to New York and joining the staff of Fortune in 1934.

Her books on food include the best of Italian cooking, continental flavor, and the art of Scandinavian cooking.
