Rafael Steinberg first crossed the pacific in 1951 as a correspondent heading for the Korean war. Later he lived in japan as a time correspondent and as Tokyo bureau chief fro newsweek.

He traveled 21,000 miles gathering material in the vast region covered by the present volume. His other books include Japan, Postscript from Hiroshima and the foods of the world volume on the cooking of japan.
