Chains is the story of ?John? Janakiraman, a non-resident Indian (NRI),who returns to Madras, his home town, after serving a top US Corporation in Silicon Valley for an extended period. When in the US, Janakiraman is offered a senior position in a leading Madras-based industrial group. Lured by the prospect of coming back home and relieved by the possibility of bringing up his teenaged daughter and young son in the Indian tradition, Janakiraman comes back to Madras. There is comes face to face with a family-run Indian business corporation ? a very curious animal, and its CEO, a curiouser creature. He soon finds out that his apprehensions about his family adjusting to the demands of Indian life are less daunting than the adjustment he himself has to undergo to settle down in Corporate India. How Janakirman handles the grave clash between his personal value systems and his company?s value systems is told in a witty and engaging style. Chains describe the traumatic experience of a non-resident Indian family returning to India and trying to settle down. It deals with the problems that the new Global economy has spawned. The frequent shifting of residence between different countries, the identity crises created by life situations that are changing dramatically and the resultant perpetual sense of fugue and grips the families of competent business managers.
