This book contains four stories entitled, Grandma's House Had No Water, Grandma's House Had No Electricity, Grandma's Scary, Mean Gander, and Grandma's Onion Patch. The author created these in large type because your child will enjoy reading these books himself/herself. It has always been the author's dream to paint a picture of the daily life-style of a child, as she remembers it since the 1930s, for the younger generation of today and tomorrow. Today's generation and future generations may never know how it came to be that most children live a life of luxury, in the year 2004, compared to generations past. The author illustrates her mother pulling water from a cistern because water needed electricity to pump it into the homes. It took many years for electricity to reach the entire countryside of America. The author paints a picture of the day electricity lit up the house for the very first time! She also visits with your child, as she shares with him/her the trips to the outhouse in the middle of the winter and the summer rains. She hand-drew pictures of the real world a child lived, as the family picked weeds, daily (except Sundays), from two and a half acres of onions, planted from seeds. The author explains, to your child that children and their parents provided the only income for the family as they worked together on these farms. Most people lived on small farms during the 1930s and '40s because automation had only begun to take place. Without automation, it was necessary for people and horses to do all the work. The author explains to your child that "people" created automation by actually thinking of ideas to make this work easier. After people created electricity, they were then able to create pumps, which automatically pumped water into the house as well as to provide water for all of their animals. Later people created endless tools and recreational needs to use with the new electricity and conveniently pumped water usage. Today the author sees man going to the moon, and exploring outer space with rockets! She sees people talking on telephones without wires. Because man created electricity in past generations, we created television sets that instantly carry scenes and voices of people, live, from countries all over the world! Today the computer, education, clean environment, health issues, and many other concerns offer seemingly endless opportunities to improve our way of life into the future. Maybe your child will make contributions never dreamed of, that will make America an even better, safer and more enjoyable place to live.
