The protagonist in this story is Malcolm Bannister. He's involved in a deal involving a hunting lodge, where illegal activities were carried out. Bannister isn't aware of it, but ends up in trouble with the FBI. He is arrested and it subsequently results in him having to spend 10 years in jail because of the Racketeer Influenced And Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO). In The Racketeer, there's a twist in the story when five years into imprisonment, Bannister has a divorce and loses his son. He's expelled from his work. During that time, Raymond Fogletree, a federal judge is killed and it's a mystery the FBI is unable to solve. They need Bannister's help, to which he agrees only if they set him free.
